When I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in the Fall of 2019, my doctor recommended I consider adding an “injectable” to my diabetes medications. The idea of adding an “injectable,” shook me to the core. I was at a cross road. I could choose to do nothing; accept the progression of diabetes as my fate; take more and more medication; and then anticipate the progressive destruction the disease would have on my body. Or I could choose to act in the affirmative; educate myself about diabetes; and take personal responsibility and control of the destiny of my health and well being. I choose the latter.
I was given an informational pamphlet for the Prevent, Delay, and Manage Type 2 Diabetes course.
I called Theresa Garnero, and after a long discussion, joined the Sweet People Club (SPC). I’ve learned so much about diabetes via the self-paced on-line program. Unlike in-person, classroom style training, this program allows you to cycle back thru the on-line program to re-review any materials presented. If further clarification is needed, your questions can be asked during the real time access virtual meetings, which are held twice monthly. For me, having on-going real time access to medical professionals, is the key, and the gold standard of a diabetes education program. Previously I have attended short term, in-person classroom training, only to find myself after the course was concluded with many more questions. Unfortunately, those programs did not have on-going support where I could get answers to my questions. Thus, much of the material remained a mystery to me.
Ms. Garnero, a Diabetes Nurse Educator and Ms. Bouquet, a Registered Dietitian conduct the real time access, virtual meetings. Both are highly acclaimed, extremely well versed in diabetes, and are friendly and welcoming during the meetings.
What has changed for me since starting this program? My fasting blood sugar levels are in the 80’s and 90’s, rather than in the triple digit numbers. I’ve learned there are no “bad”foods, just “bad” habits. I’ve learned to eat in a manner that nourishes my body and my “blood sugar spikes and lows” are almost non-existent. My fatigue level is down and my energy level up, so I have the physical/mental ability to accomplish more in a day. I sleep better at night; and feel so much more rested. I’m satiated with smaller nutritious meals, and this has resulted in some weight loss. The greatest benefit is that I find myself turning a corner and the real sense that a switch is being flipped in my brain, that I’m able to manage my diabetes; rather than it controlling me. I give this the highest rating! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This course has helped me cope with triggers that kept me from reaching my healthy goals. I liked getting support from the leader of my group, others in my group and experts in diabetes education and dietitians. I lost weight and my A1C went from pre-diabetic to normal. The training videos are helpful and talking to someone live helps fill in the gaps. I like having a short weekly assignment that is not overwhelming but then being able to watch as many videos in the training library as I like. Education, community and support are important but getting that support from a professional team of diabetes educators is priceless. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have learned about diabetes, its symptoms and related effects upon my body, helping me to understand and develop a comprehensive plan to be proactive in the treatment of my condition, type 2 diabetes. I found the support and interaction of the group comforting and inspirational. My health has changed significantly. The lessons, the videos and the Office Hours provide reliable information and constant encouragement. My A1c is down and my spirits are up. As a 78 year old prediabetic, I think it was the answer to my prayers. I like that it’s self paced – we’re all different! And I like being treated with understanding when I feel I’ve failed. The invaluable interaction with founder Theresa and registered dietician Stephanie, where participants’ questions are actually answered and discussed is so helpful. The program has educated me to prevent type 2 diabetes with exercise and diet. I liked learning what types of exercises aid in preventing type 2 diabetes. I also learned the importance of reading the labels on products that you buy at the store. And, understanding what the labels are conveying. I’ve lost at least 5% weight after starting and A1c reduced from 5.8 to 5.5. I’ve had motivational ups and downs, but felt encouraged to accept and work with this. I appreciated being able to meet with a small congenial group of fellow DPP (Diabetes Prevention Program) participants and instructor, Melanie. I felt accepted, encouraged and was given valuable suggestions to help me to pursue the program in my own way. I have looked forward to the meetings and check ins by Melanie and they helped motivate me to maintain focus. My doctor had no idea where to refer me, as she knew no Certified Diabetes Educators in the Cincinnati Ohio area! She said to just follow a Mediterranean Diet. So, I was left to figure out how to stop my prediabetes from escalating ALONE! I’m so thankful I found Sweet People Club! I feel more confident in making every day choices, especially with adding in physical activity. Before I thought it was all or nothing, and now I realize that I can add in little movements here and there, and have even checked blood sugar after and seen improvement! This is huge.
